Spitball: A CCAD Comics Anthology is an annual publication created during the spring semester in the Comics Anthology Practicum at Columbus College of Art & Design. Each student in the class is paired with a professional comic writer to collaborate on comics that are collected and published in the anthology. From cover to cover, every element of the book is designed and produced by the students.

“There are few projects one can do in art school that provide this rigorous of a professional industry experience. Not only does it equip students with training for nearly all aspects of publishing, but even more importantly, it requires them to effectively collaborate with others; to meet deadlines, learn how to communicate respectfully and professionally, to engage with the pressures and stresses of the impact your work ethic has on the rest of your team and the incredible joy of achieving a shared goal.”
— Caitlin McGurk, Curator and Associate Professor at The Ohio State University Billy Ireland Cartoon Library & Museum.

“Doing Spitball was a great way to get a condensed experience in all the aspects of the comic industry, from comic creation itself to the business side of releasing an entire book. After Spitball, I worked in every part of the industry from the ground up, so I can say it really helped to have that solid foundation and preparation for breaking into it!”
— Alissa Sallah, Assistant Editor of Spitball #1 and #2, Class of 2016. Creator of Weeaboo (Oni Press, 2021), Sun Tribe: Waffle Shack Index (Viz Media, 2024) and many other comics.
