Spitball: A CCAD Comics Anthology is an annual publication created during the spring semester in the Comics Anthology Practicum at Columbus College of Art & Design. Each student in the class is paired with a professional comic writer to collaborate on comics that are collected and published in the anthology. From cover to cover, every element of the book is designed and produced by the students.
“There are few projects one can do in art school that provide this rigorous of a professional industry experience. Not only does it equip students with training for nearly all aspects of publishing, but even more importantly, it requires them to effectively collaborate with others; to meet deadlines, learn how to communicate respectfully and professionally, to engage with the pressures and stresses of the impact your work ethic has on the rest of your team and the incredible joy of achieving a shared goal.”
— Caitlin McGurk, Associate Curator and Assistant Professor, The Ohio State University Billy Ireland Cartoon Library & Museum
“Being a part of SPITBALL is what convinced me that comics was what I would be doing for the rest of my life. It brought me back to this medium that I love, and challenged me in the best ways. The professors have created a truly incredible project that not only provides real-world experience for students, but also pushes them to be at their best, and create something all their own.”
— Ethan Pope, Assistant Editor (Spitball 9), Class of 2024
